August in Cornwall

Started by Started by: Yannis
Everyone, between Bramblebush and North Devon weekends (we will be there in both) we will tour Cornwall in our van. I need to find one or more beaches with a surfing school where the kids can take some lessons and where I can windsurf if the weather allows it. Anyone can think of such uniCornish (pun not intended!) places to satisfy both kiddie surfing and windsurfing? Any advise would be much appreciated.

Godrevy beach has surf lessons, also probably the best windsurf beach/area in england for wave sailing. only been to Sennan cove a couple of times but would think lessons would be available there also, but not such a winsurf friendly beach. The whole area of Penzance and St Ives is epic for both surfing and windsurfing and has to be one of the areas to look at for both sports. Most beaches with a decent break will be offering surf lessons during the holidays though I should think. Other places to consider would be the Camel Estuary, Polzeath being the surf beach and Daymar Bay/Rock more windsurfing. Bude and Watergate Bay could also be worth a look but my recomendation would be Godrevy/Gwithian. Dont know the South coast so well but sure others will chime in.

I'd highly recommend Polzeath for surfing, then round the corner to Daymer Bay for windsurfing.

Polzeath has two or three surf schools. Daymer is excellent for windsurfing, it's also a very nice family beach, with plenty of shelter from the wind. You need to check the tide times for Daymer though, beware of outgoing spring tide.

And finally I'd recommend staying at Dinhams Farm campsite. Masses of space, good showers and very friendly.

I second Andrew's suggestion for surfing at Polz and windsurfing at Daymer. On big swell days you can do both at Daymer and the waves will be much smaller having come round the headland and into the estuary.

Bigbury on Sea would be a decent stop-over. Nice beach, Burgh Island, decent surf, lifeguards, surf school...
