Christchurch is a spectacular location on the Dorset coast, protected by the mile long Hengistbury Head the natural harbour offers relatively flat-water, excellent for learning or for days when the wind is off-shore at the beach. Alternatively, Avon Beach and Steamer Point offer great open sea sailing within Christchurch Bay

Harbour

Windsurfing
Excellent flat water blasting venue. Great for beginners and intermediates. From the launch area carefully make your way through the moored boats (or if you can't make it, it is worth the walk/wade) because you then come upon a massive expanse of waist deep flat water. There is one small deep water channel, clearly marked. Avoid going anywhere near the harbour entrance when the tide is falling. There is a real danger of being sucked out in a 10knot current. You have been warned! We often visit on spring high tide weekends, to ensure there is enough water in the harbour and to maximise our time on the water but these are the weekends when the currents of water leaving the harbour are at their strongest.
Parking
Large pay and display car park. Can be busy on sunny days in July and August, when you should arrive early. On the expensive side, rises to about £6 - £10 in peak season.
Facilities
Large grassy rigging area.. toilets, big cafe and pub all close by. Spot on water windsurf shop just over the road.
Location

Avon Beach
Windsurfing
Superb wave sailing venue. There is an offshore sandbar towards the western end of the car park, the position of which is constantly changing, which gives rise to some nice sets. The beach is often sheltered from the wind and is a great place to watch the wave action from close proximity. If you do not like the waves, launch from the eastern end of the car park. There are extensive areas of shallow water at low tide.
Parking
Big privately owned pay car park but gets full very quickly in summer. Right on the edge of the sandy beach.
Facilities
Good café - opens early for breakfast but it is a little pricey since they tarted the place up and banned people in dripping wetsuits! Live music with free admission on Friday and Saturday nights in season. Next door, toilets and small shop all right on the beach. Spot on Water windsurf shop just around the corner. Rig on the beach. Out of season, you can rig on the tarmac car park.
Location

Steamer Point
Windsurfing
Another great wave sailing venue, just the next beach down from Avon. This is a much quieter beach and ideal when the crowds have taken over at Avon / Mudeford harbour. The sailing is straight into deep water with rolling South Coast swells.
Parking
Restricted parking for high vehicles - just 3 spaces, otherwise reasonably large car park.
Facilities
Large grassy rigging area. Friendly café to the right of the car park, toilets and a seasonal life guard service on part of the beach. This beach is also home to Christchurch Windsurfing Club.

Top wave sailing spot in a strong SW-WSW. Some of the best down-the-line riding on the south coast!
