Bump n Jump.

Bit of a head screw having my sailing deconstructed by Ant Baker. But went with it, as thats what I'm here for. All for the good and could feel it making a big difference on staying up wind, early planing and jumping.

Only 2 of us on the clinic - me and Mike Stone (owner of Worthing Watersports). One other guy is out here (Neil, owner of Quayside windsurfers), but he's decided he doesn't like waves so he's binned the clinic to sail flat water @ Kanaha. Apparently 4 folks binned the trip at the last minute due to personal circumstance. Whatever - a kook:pro ratio of 2:1 sounds pretty good to me.

Sail:5.8

Sailed Sprecks from house. Light. Started off on Evo 90/5.8 and too light. Managed to stay upwind, but came off at the key hole through the reef. Swam kit through but board went over rocks. No damage.

Used paddleboard borrowed from JP with 5.9 (ants sail). Bit of a revelation using 32" lines - really gets you further away from the sail. Real head screw with tacking as Ant is a real proponent of going around the sail late, whilst Cribby goes early. Ant - harness lines forwards; Cribby - harness lines back. Grrr.

Popped round to JP's house - met the man himself. Real nice guy. Nice truck. F*k me - I never saw a TV that big before. Nice pad though.Borrowed another board.

Flatbread Pizza for dinner. Pete Thommen joined us.

Up to the Cannery. Met Goya & Pio. Blagged some fins and harnesses to try. Levi Siver popped in, as did Kevin Pritchard; quick hi to them both.

Out on 5.8 and SUP 9'2. Weird being on big board with no straps but all good practice.

Pete Thommen joined us for dinner.

5.8 & SUP again. Waves up to head high +. Jumping an SUP is weird; don't. It just drops away from you. Rinsed. Bitch to gybe it. But FUN !!! I need one. Knackering.

Wave sailing on 5.8 and 9'2" SUP with 1:1 coaching from Ant. Down the line on up to head high. Big board that kind of thing but manageable. Great session; pretty amazing going DTL on a board that size and getting a few linked turns.

Sail:5.4

Bought 5.4 Alpha sail. Kanaha to start with. Shit sail to start with on new sail; not enough downhaul. Ant also dissing Cribby style large footsteps.

Back to Sprecks. Went out on 5.4 & Twinzer, good to start with but got skunked. Bogged back and changed for Evo and 5.4. Wind dropped off a bit. OK sail.

Went out early afternoon from the house in Spreks. Awesome wave sail on 5.8 and Evo. Started out on 5.4, but not so good.

Multiple linked turns going DTL on logo to mast high, x-on. Sic.

In for a break, and off to Hookipa for a looksy. Levi Siver, Antoine, Kai Lenny etc all out there.

Back to Spreks and back on the 5.8 / Evo. Just me and Ant, 1:1. Sic session. Best ever. Logo to mast high, fully committed DTL, x-on, logo to mast high. Multiple linked turns. Frikkin amazing.

Best wave sailing day ever today. Absolutely stoked.

Up early to watch JP and Antoine Albeau out at Hookipa for an SUP photoshoot. JP had a 4.7 on his SUP and Antoine drew the short straw and only got an SUP with a paddle. Mast high. Both those boards are v slippery (I've used them), especially the one that Antoine was using. Both JP & AA struggling with the deck grip. Cool to watch, especially JP dropping tacks and gybes due to shit grip on prototype boards.

Round to JPs house to pick up an NP XCombat 400 skinny mast to try out. Skinny mast feels so different to the X9 SDM. My new 5.4 rigs on a 400 mast, but felt a little soft and mushy on an SDM X9 mast. With the RDM, feels just about right and the sail feels alive. Weird but cool. So much more (manageable) power in the sail.

Logo to mast high, x-on, well powered up on 5.4 and 90 Evo @ Spreks. DTL. Sweet.

I liked the skinny 400 so much I borrowed a skinny 430 from JP to try.

One for tomorrow.

Mike - sounds like you are having a pretty awesome trip. We've been having hellacious wind and waves here - in case you haven't heard. Overpowered on a 3.7 four days of the week. The waves have been pretty blown out. I'm yearning for a 4.5 down the line day. Maybe some day I'll persuade M to go to Maui.

You lucky, lucky, bast**d. We need more pics though Mike. Great to see some real waves again. What a trip!
