Christchurch

Christchurch is a spectacular location on the Dorset coast, protected by the mile long Hengistbury Head the natural harbour offers relatively flat-water, excellent for learning or for days when the wind is off-shore at the beach. Alternatively, Avon Beach and Steamer Point offer great open sea sailing within Christchurch Bay

Looks like there should be enough wind to get out this weekend. It sounds as though a few folks are intending to come down to the harbour this weekend, so that's where we'll most likely be. We may go round to Avon if its sailable (strong Easterly), Branksome is also possible. We'll decide on the evenings events depending upon who show's up.

For proper sea sailing in cleaner wind, there may also be a contingent at Pagham. Post something here to let others know if you're going there or anywhere else.

Don't know the area at all, but according to my windsurfing book Branksome Chine is good in NE with a swell. Can anyone confirm this? Is anyone interested in trying?

Added by Carl on 06/10/10

I've not sailed there before but I would imagine the wind should be cleaner than Avon. Avon gets sheltered by the cliffs in a NE which are about 1.5km upwind. There are cliffs upwind at Branksome too, but they are much further away, so probably less of an issue. I've also been told Swanage is good in NE too, which looking at the map should get even cleaner wind but not sailed there myself either. Maybe we should change the venue if its NE.

Pagham should be good although you are limited to mid to high tide. No cliffs to blow over the back of. Tides are springs and high tide is 1200 Saturday and 1241 Sunday. Only downside is the swell doesn't look up to much.

Where may people be based this weekend ? Trying to decide where to book for the caravan.

Myself and a friend were thinking of coming down to Christchurch on Saturday. That's forecast to be a straight Easterly - does Avon Beach work OK in that?

I'm going to be in Bournemouth on Friday and the weekend, so Poole or Christchurch gets my vote! Winds look like they're blowing from the east so could maybe try Branksome Chine or Boscombe surf reef. By the way I haven't sailed either of those venues before, but change is good right?!

Hi Alison - Harrow Wood farm is open now I think, and is about 5 minutes drive away from xchurch harbour:-

www.caravan-sites.co.uk/

Ed - Avon is sailable in an Easterly. cross on port tack, but it can get gusty because the wind cas come over the land at the far end of the bay so it needs to be strong enough to overcome that.

Tim - Are you still sailing today (Fri), I was going for a look at Avon in a few minutes but could be persuaded to try Branksome if you're likely to be around there.

Helen and I will be down on Saturday night, ready for a good sail on Sunday. Any thoughts on where everyone is eating on Saturday night?

Sorry Carl, I'd already left for Hamworthy when you posted. Hamworthy was good today with an easterly - might be an idea for the weekend.

Hi Bernie, the Globe is definately out for Sat night - they seem to have put what looks like an office block on the site where we used to park up. We'll probably end up where we went last time, the Cat & Fiddle at Hinton, the food seemed good enough and pretty reasonably priced too.

I'm thinking I might head to Pagham sunday afternoon. Anyone else likely to do the same (or sailed there today)?

Added by beth on 10/10/10

I will probably head to Pagham if the wind is ne this afternoon
