Sneaked in a sail in Christchurch harbour on the way to North Devon.

Wind was on-shore at Avon Beach and it looked mushy and horrid, then a local said the harbour looked good. Went round there an had an excellent blast across the harbour.

A wet forecast delayed our trip to Westward Ho, but the rain stopped and the wind came up in the afternoon so we sneaked a quick harbour session in and left the next day instead.

Vulcan attempt # 1

Second time in 3 days that I had Hayling pretty much to myself. Got down a little later than planned, as the tide was on the turn. Car park packed when I arrived but as the tide came in the water cleared and by the time I had finished I was one of only a couple of people out. I have to confess to not really understanding this. I know Hayling has a well-deserved reputation as a kit-muncher at high tide but it really wasn't that bad today, particularly as I think we are on neap tides.

Good to see Nick B, Ali, Kev and Kev. And as soon as I spotted someone out on the water in board shorts I knew who that would be and sure enough it was Adrian - clearly thinking he was still in Dahab.

5.3m was perfect with my Skate and "new" fin. I wanted to loosen it up a bit for freestyle so bought a 34cm slalom fin off ebay and took a saw to it. It is now a bespoke 20cm freestyle fin - and worked amazingly well. So well in fact that I didn't even try my new board despite it being windy enough - my Skate felt new. All in all, a great session and after the wind dropped I got home for bathtime (the kids, not mine).

It was a good sail - out and back.
I came in to tell Mark that I didn't want any more sail up.
Then I bogged out and bogged back.
The wind had dropped and that was it for the day! Oh the woes of being a windsurfer! Still, it was good to see Steve, Linda, Graham and Elaine and I enjoyed the chocolate muffin.

Was hoping today was going to be big. I had lent my kit to Matt and a mate leaving me only a 6.1 or 4.7. Knowing it was going to get windy went 4.7. Big mistake as wind never kicked in even tho good waves at high tide. Must be more selfish next time.....

Was really pleased to have OMWC members around. I don't sail much in waves so was good to see others going out and being encouraging. Had great fun in the waves. Gained in confidence and even pulled off some ok gybes. Was a bit overpowered but next sail down was 4.5m and I hate changing sails anyway! A good afternoons sailing.

A classic Westwood Ho! sail with onshore wind and proper swell lines. Didn't get out the back but had a great time sailing with all the other OMCites. Is it me or has this venue become kite city, loads of kiters but they all seemed friendly and no problems.

I thought it would be interesting to mix it up a bit on the Bank Holiday weekend, rather than just doing what I've done before... Graham Jones was talking up the possibility of K-Bay being useful on the Saturday, so off I went.

Mixed sun, SW-ish, so blowing straight into the bay, but that of course (of course!!) means it's cross from the launch spot, enabling one to zoom around on the waves inside the bay. A couple of people were doing that, but you can also head upwind and go out to the Bench, apparently a Good Spot. This I did...

Some good swells, mid-tide, and waves building up... I had a really good time on the swell, but the Bench had some proper sailors having a go, so I went over to investigate. Nice. Did the right thing, looking behind for good incoming waves, spotted what looked like a good one... It certainly was! So-n-so jacked up really fast, I tried to stay with it but went over the top big time, big bang, rumbley-tumbley, hanging on to gear for dear life... When it all settled down, my UJ had broken, and the thought of swimming the 1km back wasn't too attractive! However, dear reader, it was my lucky day. The usually utterly useless webbing had held on, and I was able to sail back, albeit rather gingerly, but sail nonetheless. Phew.

Had a bit of a break, a chat to Graham, who'd finally deigned to arrive and barely got wet, then went out for another go, but by this time the wind had dropped a bit, and I was knackered. Maybe I should have brought some lunch, next time eh? Packed up and drove to Devon...

Kimmeridge - heaven even if you have to swim. Wish I could've been there - instead - getting ready for new school year and teaching windsurfing - which I love to do.

Devon delivers
with the forcast looking good for saturday all week, it did not let us down, sunshine, warm winds force 5 to 6 onshore, 2 to 3 foot waves on the inside, quite alot bigger on the outside. A good turn out from the club 13 in total and 5 guests, all the ingredeients for a great weekend. Ideal conditions for blasting up and down Westward Ho beach jumping off and over the waves giving us lots of smiling faces and a few good gybes on the return in were pulled off too. There had to be a few crash and burns to even things out ! no brakeages or injuries this time ! Carl making it look all to easy needs to get his pilots licence with such a high amount of air time, the rest Andrew, Heather, Bill, Chris L, Chris H and myself were happily enjoying the fun conditions.
Sunday
plenty of stiff and sore joints today did not deter several people going surfing in the 3-4 foot waves, while others were happy just to chill out and recover.
overall a very pleasant and successfull weekend for us all,
Nigel

Getting past the kiters at The Ho!

A great session at the burrows with a bit of swell and a strongish Westerly. Quite a few of us out and loads of kiters, but there was plenty of space so it didn't really matter so much. Some good jumping when you cut up hard into wind.

Didn't get out windsurfing again at The Ho! but got some prtetty good surfing instead. Got a bit of a shock one day when a fin appeared quite close by. I don't think they get sharks at the burrows but even so I thought about coming in for a rest at that point but then no-one around me seemed to have noticed it so I convinced myself I must have imagined it and just carried on surfing. Later on when we took the dog for a walk along the bay we realised there was a small pod of dolphins or porposises playing about in the surf a little further out which was probably what I had seen.

A superb session at Hamworthy; Southerly on neap tides. It was joyous - we were flying! Should have changed down from the 6.3 when it got up, but it behaved a bit better with LOTS of extra downhaul and outhaul, er, and a smaller board attached. Mark, never one to give in, obviously stuck with the 8.5 / 155 combo...! Pleased with a lot of dry gybes until I got too knackered and overpowered to sheet in. Then it became a series of magnificent wipeouts! Even yesterday's corned beef sandwich for lunch did not damp our enthusiasm. Bag of chips in the van on the way home. Living the dream! Living the dream!

Interesting conditions - actually windy at Westward Ho!!. Southerly, so slightly cross-off, swinging to cross. Arrived at 8, ate breakfast, sat around a bit waiting for the water to get a bit closer...

All in all, a good couple of hours of down the line hooning about, without any huge mishap. I really enjoyed myself. I even remembered to bring some lunch... which I was glad to eat! I turned out to be the only Ocean Motioner in action at that beach that day. Where were you all? It didn't rain all that much, really... I think I'm turning into Nick McKay, which is no bad thing!
