'Big Thursday' in Brandon Bay!
We recced the whole bay and found nobody out - partly due to the huge swell (5m, 20 sec period) and partly due to the poor wind direction. Went to the point at Mossies where it all looked particularly intimidating.
So went went to Smerwick Harbour - over the O'Connor Pass, through Dingle. We were met with gusty offshore wind but beautiful lines of clean swell.
I grabbed my bargain ebay Evo (my 'big' wave board) and the 5.1m borrowed from Cribby which I didn't fare very well on - it was a very powerful on/off freestyle sail which accentuated the horribly gusty wind and made catching waves even more tricky. Quickly changed to my much softer 4.7m Ice which was perfect.
I certainly made more turns on the waves today than in the rest of my wavesailing career to date. My top turn started to come together and we spent 4-5m hours on the water until our arms could take no more. Towards the end of the afternoon Guy headed back to Brandon Bay but after just one run out declared it crap and came in.
A great day rounded off with copious amounts of Guinness in Spillanes.... obviously!
