This was the only 'windy' day in a week at Dahab. A bit of a shame however we had several days of pleasant light wind freestyle (and several days where there wasn't enough wind even for a bit of sail twirling).
But this was very much a family holiday, the sun was shining and we couldn't get Nayra out of the water - so nothing much to complain about! Especially as we experienced above-average temperatures for this time of year in Egypt - a very nice change to the UK.

Another great week in Dahab.

Last sail today - a pretty chilled out end to the week. Went for a couple of vulcans but didn't really have the power.

To summarise the week: we had some wind every day and most days it was probably 5.7m weather (for freestyle) or 6m+ for blasting. Which I think is OK, but you'd normally expect it to be a bit windier than this in Dahab in mid-June. The place was certainly a bit less busy than normal. Temperatures were pretty high: 40c+ so Nayra was glad of her air-conditioned creche.

Bit underpowered today and also a bit wary of my somewhat swollen ankle. Well, that was my excuse for leaving the vulcans alone...

Had a bash at a few vulcans today. Good fun although a bit scary if you value your ankles. Sure enough by the end of the day I could barely walk after a particularly hard tail-first landing. Still, at least the video evidence showed where it was all going wrong, so have something to work on now (once the ankle is better).

wind a bit more fickle today and never really produced the goods - would really have needed 7m+ to get consistently planing - bit too much like hard work for a holiday...

Another good day. Eventually managed one downwind 360 although didn't manage to repeat this for the rest of the week!

Slightly windier today and spent a long time trying to get a downwind 360, still without much luck. Frustrating, as it seems impossible to bodge up a 360 without totally sinking the rig and having to spend the next 5 minutes wrestling it to the surface! But good fun nevertheless.

First day in Dahab - great to be back in Baby Bay: not a ripple on the water. Went for some lay down gybes in the hope that they would help me with my downwind 360s. Also good to find that I could still manage the odd upwind 360 (Baby Bay seems to be the only place I can ever do these).

The icing on the cake...
A pleasant morning on a 6.6 almost making Essex Ducks (managed to get all the way around on one, but then got pulled over the front at the end) and practicing air gybes. All the better for it being boardshorts weather again.
At lunchtime the wind came out of nowhere and kicked up quite a chop, even in the lagoon. With my wetsuit back on again, the prospect of trying my first loops didn't seem quite such a daft idea so went for a few. All resulted in pretty big wipeouts but at least there was a videocamera on hand to capture them all. Now I just need to get the hang of the rotations...

PS I should add that this was our second visit to Dahab in 4 months. Again, we used Neilson based on the fact that there is a creche for Nayra. Again, Nayra was the only baby in the creche so got one-to-one care. The hotel staff (Coralia) were brilliant with Nayra. We only booked a week before the holiday so got a pretty good deal (worked out far cheaper than the Canaries for instance). The Neilson centre is a bit of a pain to get back to, but as the resort is far less busy at this time of year, they are very happy to give you a lift back in the RIB if the wind drops! All-in-all, thoroughly recommended.

Even less wind today however without the wind chill it was very comfortable sailing in board shorts.
Spent the morning on the Serenity - quite an interesting experience! It certainly shifts in non-planing winds but it is a bit of a pig when you get powered up off the wind - the centreboard/fin really makes its presense known!

Afternoon - and it was out with Jane on the tandem. I am proud to say we didn't drop a single tack or gybe. I was on a 6.5 and Jane a 5m - so at least we had a bit of space. In light winds it is pretty easy for one person to tack/gybe whilst the other waits for them to finish - to avoid a clashing of rigs. Think it would have got a bit messy in planing winds...
