Another fickle day at Hillhead. I was advised to rig 4.7 but as I felt it was dropping I took the 5.3 but should have paired it with my freestyle board. I managed to stay planing most of the time but it took a bit of pumping and was always a little marginal.

Hmm not as windy as expected / hoped. I got slightly confused when I saw someone who was obviously a fairly good sailor rigging a 4.5, explaining he was just getting used to his board. However when I saw the hydrofoil attached to his board the fog of confusion lifted.
The wind never really materialised and it was hard work to get planing, but at least the sun was shining...

Seems like ages since I was last out and although the forecast didn't look epic I was keen to get a late Sunday afternoon sail in.
My 5.3 was spot on at the start of the session and towards the end but a bit marginal in the middle.
Highlight of the afternoon was bumping into a couple we had met in Margarita ages ago - although unfortunately them it was borne out of their van not starting. At least I was able to ferry Mum and kids home whilst Dad waited for the AA...

Got to Hillhead to find Roger and Claire already there - along with plenty of day tippers. Plenty of sun, as evidenced by my sunburn tonight. Wind a bit scarcer. It teased and eventually filled in a bit more about 4.30 but 5.9m was always a little on the light side - although Claire did well on her 6m. The fickle wind prevented this from being a better session, although partly redeemed by some 360s at the end.

Left it too late to get to Bramblebush and with it being high tide I headed to Hillhead. Perfect timing! The wind had picked up just as I got there and all the folks on 5.7 and 5.3 were coming in to change down. I suspect the Hillhead sea breeze was adding to the 20knots along the rest of the coast. So I took my 4.7m and tri fin.
The first hour was certainly fast and furious - very well powered up with a few big lumps to jump off. Really impressed with the versatility of my new(ish) board. Great in the hectic conditions but also on occasion I joined Chris Audsley in the 'freestyle' area where it was much flatter.
An hour in, the wind dropped so it became a bit more marginal on the 4.7m, although I was generally still planing and from time to time it really picked up for a spell. So 4.7m was definitely the best choice.
Very pleasant afternoon, and good to put my board through its paces.

Hillhead was the busiest I had seen in ages, on the other hand it seemed like ages since I sailed at Hillhead - other than an extremely cold session in January when I went to look for the Hoegh Osaka (actually come to think of it, it was pretty busy then - but not with windsurfers).
It was May so those boots had to come off - which was very pleasant until i switched from my Skate to my new board - with rather aggressive non-slip and the hardest footstraps in the world - hopefully they will soften!!
5.9m was about right given the gusty wind, it got a bit of a handful on a couple of occasions but then dropped again.
The new board performed well - Simmer Tri-Fin. Not really ideal conditions for it as confused chop with no swell to speak of but gybed nicely. I am looking forward to its next outing...

Well I'd never see Hillhead car park so busy in January - presumably something to do with the stricken Hoegh Osaka lying off the beach. And that was my mission too. It was a bracing 8c when I arrived, no windsurfers out and the wind dropped. I rigged up and waited. When the wind arrived it unfortunately was a bit too southerly to make getting to the ship a realistic prospect. Perhaps were I better equipped with a bigger board and fin (16 cm fin not ideal for long distance upwind work) it would have been different. It was just a bit too far upwind and offshore and also the tugs policing the 300m exclusion zone looked like they meant business although whilst I was out one crashed into the ship.
I did a bit of filming with my DV mounted on my boom but that made gybing quite awkward. However I had also forgotten to charge the battery so filming didn't last long and afterwards I made the most of the flat conditions.
Came in when the wind dropped but just as I derigged it came back with some sun and the temperature rose into double figures. But happy to be warm and in the van again by then.

I was in charge of the kids today so it was to be a real day-in-the-life of a house husband.
Woke up with man flu which didn't help. Anyway got the kids to school and then hit Hillhead - chosen as it was a lunchtime, spring high and I didn't have too much time. To begin with I was the only one out but was joined by others - 4.2 was about right although it was pretty gusty - 3.7 would have been fine much of the time. Coming near the beach was a bit of a lottery, the spring tide had covered the groynes completely and twice I got pulled over them.
Didn't manage too long as I was a bit short on energy being under the weather and I should have worn my boots. But at least I got home for the school pick up. The ironing, washing, cleaning and shopping never got done though...

This was one of those sessions that started off in the 'why did I bother' category but actually turned quite nice. Hillhead: very onshore, rainy, cold, and actually not very windy. Came in after a bit of blobbing around and was seriously considering knocking it on the head - especially as I was now the only one out . However the wind swung around a bit and came up a notch and at that point the temperature seemed to increase a little (although the rain didn't abate). Nothing spectacular but nice having the place to myself and cruising along the coast. A few others came out as the wind picked up and the 5.9 was getting a bit of a handful. After suffering a bout of cramp whilst swimming after my kit I decided I would head home rather than change down. All-in-all, quite satisfying in the end

After a week of wild weather got down to Hillhead to find blue sky and sun! Initially rigged my 5.9 but one run with this on my freestyle board persuaded me to switch to my 5.3 and smaller board. This turned out to be a great combination and it was the first time of using my platinum mast. I am pleased to say that the high carbon content was noticeable both in weight and responsiveness. Unfortunately I had to end my session a little early as I managed to fling myself onto the boom, resulting in quite a winding and very painful ribs. Still, it did mean that I had packed up just as the heavens opened, so mustn't grumble too much.
