After a nice long lie in (see comments on SummerBash) and a bike ride with Nayra it was early afternoon so headed to Hillhead rather than Calshot given the retreating tide.
Hillhead was packed but with a bit of creative parking I managed to get in the car park.
The water was even busier, not helped by the fact that someone had moored a boat just off the sandbar - not the best day to do this. 6.6m was about right, could have been on a bit less. Made a bit more progress with downwind 360s...

Didn't make Bigbury (we're down there next week for our first family holiday) but did manage to get down to the Solent with Jane and Nayra. A fickle Easterly meant that Stokes Bay looked the best bet and sure enough by about 4pm there was a fairly consistent breeze - enough for a 6.9m.

The water was mirror flat - perfect for freestyle practice - but still not quite making that elusive downwind 360!

First time I had sailed at Stokes Bay for ages and am pleased to report that no iffy stomach afterwards - and the coffee is still good!

My first sail as a Dad.
Although it was good to get out, the wind didn't really play ball. Spent a lot of time off the plane and towards the end, when the wind was starting to become more consistent, I was a little cold and of course had other things to be getting home to.
Still, it was great to get out!

I was down fairly late, saw people packing up as the wind dropped at Hillhead, so went straight to Titchfield Haven / Nature Reserve which was much better. The wind was still gusty and gradually dropped off but at least it was unimpeded across Southampton Water. Loads of people out in flat water and sunshine - it could almost have been a summer event!

A strange day - S'Westly which is normally pretty good at Hillhead but the wind kept coming and going. 6m was probably the best bet - but everytime I switched to my 91 litre board the wind dropped - making my freestyle board the better bet - although it was pretty bouncey at high tide. Very busy with kiters and windsurfers but a pleasant day.

brrrrrr! Is it really late August? Fine on the water but it was certainly a mistake to hang around on the beach in a summer suit!
Onshore and grey - even the locals were giving it a miss today - but at least there was some wind. Wished I had used a smaller board as it was pretty lumpy.
