It was pretty chilly, around 7c as I recall writing this some time after the session. However it stands out as one of my best sessions for ages. Tide on the push meant some great jumping ramps and some rideable waves.
First real attempts at backloops. Remarkably easy to try, however only once you start trying them do you appreciate how tricky they are to land (steep nose-first landing, over the board, on a broad reach and with no forward momentum to de-power the sail). Good fun through.

Other windsurfers a little thin on the ground and by the time i came in there were only 2 of us left out although admittedly the tide was getting pretty high.

Another great sail at Hayling this winter. Thought I was going to miss it as just as I was leaving the house spotted a flat tyre - second puncture in 2 weeks. Happily, when I got to Hayling I found more ramps than in the tyre centre. Not quite as windy as the forecast had suggested but 5.3m was perfect and kept me going in the lulls. Good jumps were to be had and nice fun-sized waves for riding. Shredded my hands again and actually ended up too hot, possibly due to the hood I was wearing on doctors advice - now I have an official diagnosis of surfers ear. Great session, even if it never did stop raining...

Hayling: it didn't stop raining for the 3 hours I was out, my hands were bleeding as I had blistered them so much earlier in the week and at one point I got hit my a squall out the back such that I could only just hang on to my kit and wait for it to pass. Oh, and the wind was pretty up and down.

But what a fantastic session - my 5.3 was 'about right' most of the time and the waves were really clean and just coming and coming. They were better earlier on, but even at low tide there was still something to work with - conditions for both jumping and riding were excellent. Lots of people out but as the waves were so spread out there was plenty of room for everyone - great session.

Joliffe Road

With the westerly wind forecast to have some north in it I thought Hayling might be a little fickle so headed to Joliffe Road. Got there just after low tide to see the waves starting to line up nicely. Took Chris Audsley's advice to rig a 4.7m - who am I to argue with him?
First run out was better than my last few sessions put together - well powered and with nice clean waves. The wind was cross-off which, especially as it picked up, made getting over the peaks a little tricky at time as to hit them square on meant bearing away in the gusts which were getting bigger (45 knots according to Chimet) which of course tended to blow the nose of the board down into some interesting nose-first landings.
After the first 30 mins of reasonably stable 4.7m wind we then had an hour of very up and down gusts - at times you could be on a 3.7, at other times I was barely planing. However the wind stabilised as it backed off a little around 3.30pm which made for a decent last 45 mins until the fading light meant we called it a day.
Best sail for ages, and also despite the relatively low temperature, the sun shone throughout which made it very pleasant.

OK, so my second completely overpowered session on my 3.7m of the year.
Actually "session" is somewhat generous - I went out completely maxed out. Came off, got caught in a squall and couldn't waterstart for some time, and then came in again. Waited a little while for the wind to abate but it didn't (until half an hour after I left). Chimet was showing 50 knots gusting 60 knots+
For the final ignominy as I was derigging the wind ripped my sail out of my hands whereupon I had to chase it across the car park and then it got wrapped around someone's van.

Was hoping it would be a little windier or wavier, but it wasn't as windy as hoped and the water was pretty flat. Maybe this, and the late low tide was why there weren't many out when I launched just before 2pm. However by the time I called it a day there were probably 10-15 out.
Not a hugely exciting session but good to get out although I think it was the last time this year I will be using my summer wetsuit - a bit chilly especially towards the end.

Left the family at Butlins and headed to J-Road, a somewhat secretive spot between west and east wittering. It didn't disappoint. Although the wind was light there were some nice clean waves and only 2 of us out for most of the session. It was a little onshore in the SW wind (it is apparently better in a westerly) so mostly backside riding but still very good fun. After saturday's 3.7m shenanigans, 5.9 felt like an 11m!

Normally when I rig my 3.7 I get one planing run and then the wind drops. Beth commented that it looked like the wind was dropping and so I feared the worse as I left the beach.
I needn't have worried. I have never been so overpowered on my 3.7. According to Chimet the wind was gusting to 50-55 knots and average was 40 knots, it certainly felt it. Frustratingly there were some nice waves but I was too out of control on the face to do anything. In fact on the breaking waves the spray off the top was so fierce that visibility was a problem, and it was quite painful on the face!
In summary, Brian 1 Jonathan 0.

Not my best ever sail. Don't think I was fully over my man flu and my balance was pretty ropey - gybes unreliable and jumps were resulting in nose first crashes. Not helped by being a little overpowered, it was definitely a bit breezy out the back. Finally found my mojo towards the end but overall a relatively short session. But nice to get back on the water and to see Heather and Bill

A session of 3 parts:
1 - got to hayling a bit too early, egged on by the WhatsApp gang - but tide too high and dumpy, bit of a lottery for those who tried to launch - some took a real hammering. The rest of us sat in the vans out of the rain
2 - launched on my 3.7, definitely a somewhat sketchy launch still a big shoredump and Chimet showing 46 knots however pretty quickly the wind dropped and I was left floating or rather sinking. I saw black clouds approaching so held out expecting another squall but it never arrived
3 - changed to my 4.7 which I should have done far sooner. Immediately I was getting big jumps as the waves tidied up, then treated to a beautiful sunset, the rain even stopped for a while!
Second Sunday in a row that I sailed until dark. And good to sail with Kyle again.
